Playing with 10 Players

Yes we have all experienced the situation when a player has been sent off the field with a yellow card. The time period that they are off is up to the umpire’s discretion and thus the 10 players remaining on the pitch need to adapt and cope to the best of their abilities.

The general rules when playing with 10 men are:

  1. To ensure that your midfield line and defensive line are complete and to rather be short numbers up front.

  2. To defend the middle of the field and to allow the opposition defenders to have the ball hoping that they will try play it long and then your team can close down an area with numbers rather than one player doing it on their own.

  3. To only counter attack with a max of 5 as this will not allow you to be susceptible if you lose the ball.

  4. To force free hits and slow things down so as to “use up” the time of playing with only 10 men.

What if there are only 8 mins remaining in the game and you are 1-0 down?

Here I would suggest playing 3 at the back, i.e. you will not have a free player sweeping. I would then still have 3 midfielders and 3 strikers, which is more attacking than two up front. The 3 defenders need to man to man the opposite strikers and not dive into tackles as if they are eliminated then they are the last line of defense.
