Chelmsford’s return to the EHL East Conference after the winter break promised much with all key squad players available, but this tough away game asked questions of the green’s finishing skills that went unanswered. Despite the majority of possession throughout the game Chelmsford at times struggled to find cohesion in front of the opposition’s goal. Credit to Horsham, they defended doggedly and strongly. Chelmsford battered away but often found the ball skimming the wrong side of a goalpost, inching away from the front runners or fired away by the Horsham keeper. Despite being well organised and energised in the first half, Chelmsford could not find the back of the net. A pair of short corners late in the half failed to break the deadlock. Chelmsford set to the task of building controlled play in the second period with Sarah Glanvill, Libby Knifton and Beth Wild showing commitment and pace and readily exploring attacking options. Knifton made a fast charge to the right of the D but her neat cross just span behind the oncoming Glanvill. Kat Letts, Julia Butterworth and Sarah Bolton endeavoured to support the strikers from midfield but the key breakthrough eluded Chelmsford. Horsham responded with pressure on Chelmsford’s defence. 10 minutes into the second half they snappily took control of a loose ball and managed a shot that struck the inside of a post and crept in. Chelmsford were unphased by this knock back and continued their pressure on Horsham, winning two more short corners but without the killer touch to bring them back in the game. Signs of frustration in the Chelmsford team served to motivate Horsham who held on to the one goal lead to take the points. Chelmsford’s next match is against Sevenoaks at Chelmer Park on Saturday 13 February, starting at 12.00. |
