Chelmsford came up against 3rd placed Southgate at Chelmer Park missing coach/player Royce Waters and also Ian Belchamber through injury. Chelmsford from the start of the game were put under a great deal of pressure with the opposition scoring with a well worked ball down the right which was passed into the goal from close range.

With the home side 1-0 down they were still in the game despite the pressure they were under and in the space of 5 minutes won 5 short corners but unfortunately were unable to convert any of these opportunities into goals. Penalty corner specialist Adrian Palmer was on the sidelines resting after his first spell. From the final short corner Southgate intercepted the ball and counter attacked winning themselves their own short corner which they converted.

Southgate then stuck in another goal from open play just before half time after breaking down the middle.

In the second half Southgate managed to score 3 quick fire goals in the first 10 minutes with the third being a sublime reverse finish from a Southgate forward.

With 25 minutes still to play Chelmsford managed to adjust to the attacking style of play and managed to create a number of chances including a Joe Rich chance after Marc Pike spun on a sixpence and beat 2 men through the centre however the chance was well blocked.

Josh Mepham went extremely close from a short corner opportunity but scooped the ball just over the bar. Southgate & ex South African international goalkeeper Chris Hibbert made a number of extremely good saves throughout the game and if it was not for him, Chelmsford could have made the result look far more respectable.

After Chelmsford’s close recent results, they will look to draw a line under this game and move on to next week where they face 5th placed Holcombe in a very winnable game.
